Turn energy savings into a fun family activity with our energy saving agreement

Why You Should Do It

Trying to make energy savings a habit in your family?  We have a fun and easy way to get everyone involved!  Make an agreement between the youth and parents or guardians in your family about energy savings: if kids take action that help reduce your energy bills, they get to keep the difference.  That way everyone will pay more attention to their energy use and get kids excited about energy efficiency!

How to Do It

  1. Select "Add to My Challenge" and pledge to sign an energy savings agreement with your family.
  2. Download the Energy Challenge Energy Savings Agreement (see link on the right), print it out and sign it.
  3. Figure out when you get your electricity bill every month and mark it on your family calendar so everyone will know when to look for it.
  4. Congratulate yourself for taking action to save energy and make a difference for Minnesota!

    What if there are multiple kids in our house?

    Good question - it wouldn't be fair to sign an agreement with one kid and leave the others out.  In that case, make sure all the kids sign the agreement and then promise to put their share from the month aside, using a piggy bank or a savings jar.  Then when they have saved up enough from energy savings, you can take everyone out for a treat!  That way everyone can learn more about saving money and teamwork.

    What if our energy bills go UP?

    If you see that you are using more electricity, then it is time for you to learn more about how your home uses energy. Consider checking with your local library to see if they lend out electricity meters that you can use to measure the electricity use of your appliances, or think about any new electronics you may have brought into the house.
